Thus, the purpose of the organization is to recapture the territory of the secular mind (now claimed by religious extremists) for societal benefit by making the knowledge of alternatives to religion public and ubiquitous.
At present, ideology and theology hold a monopoly of power in Washington. Theology asserts propositions that cannot be proven true. Ideologues hold tightly to a worldview despite being contradicted by what is generally accepted as reality. Those who are members of ASUSA have become increasingly concerned over the increasing de-emphasis of science and reason in public debate and the incursions of religion into politics and secular life in general. Examples abound: pushing faith and creationism/intelligent design in school curricula, erecting religious displays on public property, propounding the idea that the U.S. was founded on Christianity, opposing abortion for religious reasons, meddling in the right to die, supposed fulfillment of prophesy as a basis for foreign policy, etc. Pursuit of religiously-based dogma leads to negative consequences for society.
Please join us in our effort to help steer public opinion back to support for a government run on a secular basis, one that is concerned with the public welfare of all citizens
